2 people watching the election results — on 2 different channels, at different locations — just told me they can tell the newspeople already know Roy Moore will win.

I wasn't watching the election results yet. I was finishing that last post.

Meade was watching Fox News, and he just started talking about how he could tell by the way they were talking that they are seeing some sort of information — which they're not revealing — that shows them Roy Moore will win.

A minute later, I got a text from my son Chris, saying "The tone of the punditry on CNN makes me think they know he'll win."

UPDATE: NYT declares Jones the winner!

Hillary and LLR Chuck did that and look at them now.

I'm sure Moore's election will damage the GOP a bit, but if this pans out we'll at least get another evening of MSM long faces and dejection. Worth it if only for that. Just as we'll always have November 2016.

I wonder: For all the "Yay Democrats are the party of morality now!" people: Exactly how do you explain Bob Menendez and the worshipping of the Kennedy family; plus Bill Clinton?

Anyone accusing Moore and Republicans is easily shut up by asking them why Bob Menendez, who literally raped girls younger than Moore is accused of merely dating, still has a Senate seat? And why hasn't the Kennedy family been burned to the ground yet?

And Roman Polanski, newly revealed to have raped a 10 year old... to the thundering standing ovation from the left. And who can forget Matt Laurer, who literally locked women into his rape room office, and the massive, massive support from our "betters" on the left?

Rick said...

Late returns tend to be rural

Early / late tends to be driven by the size of the precinct. Large precincts have have people in line at closing more often causing the counting to start later, and the higher numbers mean the validation process takes longer.

So late returns tend to be urban. This is not as pronounced in AL as it is in some states.

Benchmarks:

FiveThirtyEight's Dave Wasserman:

And Harry Enten:

Randolph is now completely in. Moore won by 30. His benchmark was to win by 25 points.

Don't forget, though — this is far from over.

no, like 100% of the African American population needs to vote for Jones in order for Jones to win. The African American population is about a quarter of the population.

Alabama is racially very split -- MUCH more so then a lot of other states. Something like 17% of white people voted for Obama.

The southern states were often 1 party states. The primary is the "real" race. Or, it usually is -- that's why this is strange that we don't know yet.

Turnout seems to be the difference. Based on what 538 is reporting, percentage-wise Moore is doing very well in rural areas, but the turnout is low so he’s netting fewer votes than he needs to offset the urban areas of the state. Percentage-wise Jones is doing poorer than expected in black areas, but turnout is high so he nets more votes. If the Times is right about where votes are still to come in — Huntsville (heavy federal government employment so tends Democrat), Tuscaloosa (college town), Montgomery, and Birmingham — then Alabama 2017 replicates Indiana 2012, where an idiot extremist candidate blew the race to the Democrat in a very red state.

A deep red state like Alabama, unbelievable!! I’m actually blown away, I thought for sure Moore would win. Thank you Republican women who stayed home or voted for Jones.

See, I knew that if Moore lost, our resident lefties woukd stop labeling all Republicans as pedophile supporters.

Oh wait. They actually just double down. Every time.

This is a win for Trump.

Steve Bannon supported Mo Brooks in the primary, not Roy Moore.

Because in Inga-land, only women can have principles.

Oh no I don’t think so. No one will forget what a bunch of assholes you were regarding the victims of Roy Moore. It’s women who pulled off this Jones win, suburban Republican women. And black Democratic voters, thank you!

Hagar said...

Mitch McConnell and the GOPe are going to regret this.

FIDO said...

Wait wait. There is only a discrepancy of 10,000 votes. What Moore should do is a Gore and call for manual recounts ONLY in heavily Republican districts and a Franken, where he randomly opens car trunks until he magically finds boxes of votes to push him over the top.

Granted, voting fraud in Alabama is slightly harder since they require voter ID and citizenship to vote. Plus you are only allowed to vote once.

So perhaps Moore is out of luck.

DickinBimbosintheRain: I voted for Perot, twice, yet get blamed for electing Bubba Tubba the Serial Rapist. In politics, outcomes matter. By backing the non-GOPe guy, Moore was able to slip in through the back door. Nice.

As of this morning, more Alabamians thought Moore "probably" did what he was accused of than thought he was innocent.

The single and only piece of evidence supporting the allegations was a doctored yearbook signature. Not "allegedly" doctored. Actually altered and presented as Moore's writing by her accuser.

"Believe all women, even ones that admit to forging evidence" is apparently the rule now.

And Menendez is still a Senator.

"It's a great, great night for anybody who hates Bannon."

How so? I'm certainly no Bannon fan, but it looks like the Republicans lost a critical seat. I can't see how revenge on Bannon equates to a win for the Republican party.

No Chuck, it's an embarrassing night showing that Republicans will overwhelmingly vote for a dipshit child molester because "R"

Sorry. I've done it. I voted for Trump because "R." I would not have voted for Moore. I won't support another Bannon candidate. Including Trump.

Anyway, so much for Bannon's primary challenge to every incumbent Republican in the Senate, save for Ted Cruz. He couldn't win Alabama! He couldn't hold Alabama!

Moore needs to sue Allred.

Ted Stevens never found out that the charges against him were trumped up literally by a prosecutor and investigator having an affair who hated him, because he died.

Now that the election is over, there is no reason for Allred to be coy.

I don't know if this was the best, worst or meh-est outcome, but it appears that yes. You can just lie to the press and let them run with it.

And no one will forget what an asshole Inga is, insisting that Moore is a pedophile, refusing to follow the links to the evidence that the accusations against him are based on obvious forgeries, and even accusing a fellow commenter of "diddling 14 year olds" because he had shown her to be a fool by his arguments. She herself demonstrates that women sometimes lie through their teeth when accusing others of pedophilia, and now she gloats that her fellow Democrats lies helped them steal an election. What a disgusting (barely) human being she is. I suppose being Inga is its own punishment.

Big Mike this is at the feet of Mitch McConnell and the RNC.

@Mac McConnell, the Hell it is! As much as I hate the sort of limousine liberals I used live among -- the sort who praised the diversity of the local high school but were careful to send their daughter to Holton Arms -- I despise the Mac McConnell and Steve Bannon sort of Republicans even more. You don't take what you can get and come back for more, you gotta put up dingbats like Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock and now Roy Moore to try to get everything all at once with a very weak candidate who's sure to blow it. So to get anything done Mitch McConnell now has to negotiate with grandstanders like John McCain and Susan Collins to preserve his 51-49 edge instead of having a 54-46 margin to work with. Yeah, gonna have lots of wins with that breakdown. Get it through that thing you jokingly call a brain that politics is not a 100% win sort of thing. You take what you can get. I remember Connie Morella in Montgomery County, Maryland, back in the day. Very liberal, but I supported her and was glad to do so because she was as far right as ever could be elected in Montgomery County. That's called maturity; try it sometime.

Good Gawd! You've got me agreeing the Chuck. Now I REALLY despise you.

Quinn -- look up the word "evidence". Eye witness testimony by the victim of a crime is evidence. Pretty strong evidence at that.

The big question to this is 'How fast is Gloria (Wicked Witch of the East) Allred getting out of town now that the election is over' and 'How quickly is this woman going to drop her law suit now that she is able to join the 'Lois Lerner Employment Track'.

Funny to see if this principle survives the election.

She will be back, with new underage accusations for the next election. Dems will consider this a winning tactic, because it worked.
